What is Music?

What would you say is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of music?  I think for most people, the first thought is something to listen to, something to do with sound.  It reaches into our emotions, it soothes a broken heart, it allows us to relive a forgotten memory, and it enriches our daily lives.

Music is used in so many ways.  We use it in movies, TV shows, coffee shops, shopping malls, when studying… I could go on and on!  It is in the background of many places whether we notice it or not and can be used to boost sales or our moods.  On Spotify, there are often playlists that have compilation of songs that do just that! We also use it as an outlet for our emotions or feelings.  Humans are, by nature, emotional creatures.  I think we all can think of a time when we needed an outlet or something to help heal the wounds of a heartbreak.  Music can and is an outlet for expressing something difficult to put into words, whether a deep pain or immense joyfulness.  Outside of physically playing or listening to music, it connects us to other people.  Orchestras, bands, and concerts are all places where people gather to accomplish something together.  This gathering enriches our lives by connecting us in a deeper and inexpressible way.  It teaches us to work together and reminds us what we can accomplish through collaboration.

So then, what is music?  The simplest definition I can think of is that it is a work of art.  What is art?  Is it something we just look at, is it just some noise that a person standing on stage is making?  I don’t think so.  Music is so much more than that.  It is a wonderful combination of creativity with physical co-ordination.  It is mentally challenging but also touches the soul.  It is the desire to create with sound and silence, painting with and in time…it is an attempt to capture the indescribable beauty of the soul.
