Why Choose Group Piano Lessons?

kids in group music class

With so many music lesson options available, it can be difficult to know what your child will benefit from the most. We often recommend that children under the age of 10 start with group piano lessons, and here’s why!

1. Children get to learn music and interact with other kids in a FUN and encouraging environment.

As every parent knows, most kids are motivated to do things when they get to have some fun! This class is designed so that they are learning fundamental piano playing techniques and musical concepts through games, exciting songs and a quick change of pace throughout the 45-minute lesson. It’s like sneaking in their vegetables in the spaghetti sauce 🙂

Before they know it, class is over and they’re already looking forward to next week’s piano lesson!

2. Students have solo time in the class, which helps motivate students to practice piano at home, as well as builds their confidence and performance skills.

Most kids get a few jitters when they are in a performance situation – but the more they perform, the less those jitters get in their way. Solo time is a regular activity in group piano lessons so that students get used to the feeling of performing, and working towards a goal with a deadline. This makes consistent practice at home easier to achieve.

3. By singing with other children in a group setting, we can train their musical ear through pitch recognition.

In each class, children learn pitch recognition by singing solfege (do, re, mi, fa, sol…) together. Through this method, children learn to recognize notes and musical patterns together by ear, which builds their musicality and ability to play and sing on pitch with accuracy.

4. All of the songs they learn have musical backing tracks, which encourages rhythmic accuracy, and also make the songs more exciting to play.

Rhythm is one of the most difficult things to teach a beginner musician, but backing tracks help make this process easier and more fun for kids. They learn to stay within the tempo of the backing track, and are able to more easily recognize when to start and stop playing.
